What is a 9-Day Fortnight?

A 9-day fortnight working pattern is a compressed working week where everyone gets every other Friday off work. So you will work 9 days instead of 10 over a two-week period.

How does it work?

We’ve divided the company into two groups, to ensure we always have people working on Fridays. One group will take the first Friday off while the second group will take the following Friday off, and so on.

Everyone will have a Handover Buddy to cover important Friday work. It’s your responsibility to make sure that the handover is thorough and accurate. It is also your responsibility to set an appropriate out-of-office.

In short, you are responsible for ensuring clear communication within your team and your team are accountable for you in your absence.

The 9-day fortnight is a universal benefit that will apply across all levels and all departments. We must all make a commitment to each other to try and respect this time off, to give our colleagues a chance to rest and re-energise.

Occasionally it may be necessary for you to work on your Friday off - for example, for a work trip, to attend an industry event, to cover sickness or to ensure an important deadline is met. Your manager, with ideally one month’s notice but less if necessary, can request your presence on your Friday off. Please note this day will be non-transferable.

What’s the plan for the trial?

We’ll trial this new working style for 6 months, with a 3-month check-in. Throughout this trial, we will be closely tracking KPIs to assess team productivity and happiness.

This benefit may be amended or revoked (with 4 weeks’ notice) at the LT’s discretion.

Why are we doing this?

At Good-Loop, what matters is the quality of work we produce - not how long we spend sitting at our desks. So, by prioritising the tasks that are most likely to have a significant impact we should be able to use our time much more efficiently, creating space for us to rest and recharge.

Having more time for ourselves, our families, our passions, our pets and our side projects - this in turn creates a happier, healthier and more motivated workforce.

All in all - we believe that by working fewer hours but by using the time when we do work much more intentionally, we will have the best possible chance of achieving our objectives.

Plus, let’s be real, this is a huge perk, so it’ll help us to attract and retain the most talented people in our industry.

Working Smarter, Not Harder

How will we make the trial a success? By working smarter, not harder.

<aside> 💪🏼 A #SNH Taskforce has been set up with the objective of ensuring the rollout goes smoothly and that we have champions in every department who will promote working smartly. We’ll also be using the group to discuss what’s going well, and not so well, throughout the trial, with the aim of finding solutions to issues as they arise.
